What are the training needs of newly trained professionals working in addiction medicine around the world? Do they get enough and appropriate training to treat people who live with addictions? A new study protocol plans to answer these questions.
QUICK FACT: There are international differences in the training quality and type given to professionals in addiction medicine, and their training needs. |
What is our plan, our protocol?
This is a Protocol for a Scoping Review for Best Evidence in Medical Education (BEME) collaboration. We want to see what the needs of addiction medicine professionals are, and, whether they feel prepared for treating people with substance use disorders.
Who is doing the study?
This is the first scoping review to systematically scope the training needs of early career professionals working in the field of addiction medicine. Experts from Ireland, Canada, Switzerland, Portugal and India work on this review and include policy advocates, healthcare providers, decision-makers and academics. An electronic search strategy has been designed in consultation with a health sciences librarian at University of British Columbia to capture all studies published on this topic. This scoping review has been registered with Best Evidence for Medical Education to enhance its transparency.
Why study training needs?
In order to improve addiction medicine education internationally we need to do more research. The needs of the addiction medicine professionals should be considered when developing training. Developing training guidelines will help professionals feel more prepared to work in the field of addiction medicine.
